Prosthetic surgery in orthopedics

When it comes to prostheses it refers to the artificial joint implant to replace a damaged or as a result of deterioration or inability to regenerate bone (due to osteonecrosis).

The surgery prosthetic joint is setting new objectives for the future, first of all the perception, by the patient, a joint normal from a functional standpoint.

To achieve this ambitious goal, it is critical the use of innovative materials, capable of adapting to the physiology of the articular structures.

There are so many advances obtained and documented by evidence of results in the medium and long-term interventions of hip and knee.

Prosthetic surgery: What’s new?

The new prosthetic surgery approaches are essentially a reinterpretation of tried and tested techniques, improved by using modern tools. Even the anesthetic procedures and techniques to control pain aim to minimize surgical stress and to promote post-operative recovery.

The real novelty of the intervention, in fact, not so much on the materials, as the surgical technique implementation, namely as the prosthesis is applied.

In the past, the implants were attached using a street side access or somewhere in post-side access to both modes was essential to detach the muscles from their position and then be re-sutured. Recovery of muscle activity of a tendon engraved and then sewed up may not be complete, with the possibility of causing lameness.

The new technique, called via mini-invasive front does not require, however, detachment of the muscle. The surgery is performed through an incision lengthwise, about 10 cm, on the front of the thigh. In this way, the muscles are spread apart but not detached. Among the advantages of this technique …

  • Reduction of post-operative pain;
  • Reduced blood loss (with no particular need for transfusion);
  • Rapid rehabilitation (the patient, in fact, starts walking already within 24 hours);
  • Reduced chance of postoperative dislocations.

What determines the success of a prosthetic implant?

The success of the intervention may depend on …

  • Quality of articular reconstruction
  • Bone quality on which to implant the prosthesis
  • Quality of rehabilitation process
  • Surgeon Experience
  • Unpredictability in the outcome of the joint reconstruction

How long can a prosthesis?

A prosthesis usually has a duration of more than ten years. The materials used are not immune from wear and, therefore, can not last forever. Different materials are available which are chosen depending on the age, the patient’s characteristics, sex, weight, lifestyle.

The duration of a prosthesis also depends on the type of activity carried out by the patient after surgery. The wear, in fact, occurs where there is movement. It is important that the patient should undergo periodic inspections of the plant. In case of signs of wear, it can be taken to replace only the prosthetic portion that is being ruined.

Who recommended the intervention of prosthetic surgery?

The surgical prosthetic, usually, can be performed on most patients, except for obese individuals, the weight of which could undermine the post-operative recovery and even damage or break the prosthesis once, in an upright position, you download the body weight on the lower limbs.
