5 Healthy Living Tips for College Freshman

The transition from high school to college life is a difficult one. There are a lot of new skills that you have to learn, and while some of those skills are more academic, many of them are just good life skills that will help you after graduation as well.

Learning how to take care of yourself and make sure that you stay healthy is one of the most important non-academic lessons you can learn while in college. If you don’t know how to take care of yourself, then you could find yourself getting sick or letting your grades fall apart in no time. Here are 5 healthy living tips for college freshman.

  1. Keep Your Room Clean

A lot of people pass germs very easily when they’re in college and if you don’t keep your room clean, you and your roommate could be passing all kinds of viruses back and forth. If you have a habit of leaving dirty clothes laying around, leaving food out, or not washing your dishes well, then make sure that you practice better-living habits for the sake of your roommate and your health.

  1. Wash Your Hands Regularly

There are all kinds of surfaces that you and other college students touch all the time. That is if you’re earning your degree at a standard in-person college, rather than USC’s online masters in communication. Every time you touch a railing, desktop, cash, or a door handle, you are touching something that hundreds of other students are touching each day and there’s no telling what might be on their hands. That’s why you should always make sure to wash your hands before you eat or touch your face.

  1. Learn to Cook

If you want to prevent weight gain during your freshman year, then you’re going to have to learn how to cook for yourself. You can start with very simple meals that mostly just need heating, and then move on to more complicated meals as you start to get comfortable in the kitchen. Just make sure that you are keeping your diet balanced with plenty of vitamins and minerals from healthy sources like fruits, vegetable, nuts and lean proteins.

  1. Always Carry Snacks

You are going to have breaks during lectures and between classes all the time, and during those times, you will probably be hungry. You could always pay far too much for the junk food snacks that you find in the vending machines and cafes, or you could pack your own healthy snacks so that you aren’t always giving in to muffins, candy bars, and potato chips.

  1. Drink Plenty of Water.

If you want to stay healthy then it’s important that you are always drinking plenty of water. If you get too dehydrated, your immune system will weaken and you will be more susceptible to floating viruses and bacteria. Plus, you will feel hungry and tired all the time, rather than energized and alert. So just start carrying around a refillable water bottle each day and you will always have water on you without having to pay for it.
