There are four main types of heart disease – these include (but are not limited to):

Arrhythmia – This is where the electrical impulses in the heart muscle change and are not uniform. When they are like this, it can then lead to a heartbeat that is too fast, a heartbeat that is too slow and an irregular heartbeat, like palpitations.

Disease of the Heart Valve – This occurs when a valve of the heart has been damaged. It may be one valve, or it may be many, but they are prevented from working correctly which then disrupts the flow of the blood through the heart.

Coronary Artery Disease – This is one of the most common types of heart disease and the biggest danger that it poses is that it increases the risk of a heart attack. The most common cause of this is the obstruction of the arteries by fatty deposits, meaning that the arteries can struggle to deliver blood where it is needed in the heart.

Heart Failure – A common misconception is that this means that the heart is not beating. However, this is actually a condition which prevents the heart from beating correctly which then leads to a buildup of fluids in other areas of the body, including in the lungs and in the feet.

There are many things that you can do to decrease your risk of suffering from a form of heart disease. Exercise is one of the best ways to increase your fitness and this includes your heart. As it is a muscle it needs to be exercised like other muscles.

Eating a healthy diet that is full of nutrients and avoiding fatty, salty and processed foods in excess is also an important part of having a healthy heart. This will also benefit your body in many other ways too.

It is also important to ensure that you see your doctor straight away if you are having concerns about your heart.
